Magicians derive nearly all their capability from the magic they study and eventually master. The primary benefit of their efforts comes in the form of the spells they learn to cast. For example, some magicians delve into the secrets of fire, learning to evoke flames with a word and gesture, shaping and directing them according to their will. Others bend the minds of their victims with Enchantment magic, turning them into unwitting pawns. A rare few dabble in the dark arts, performing such vile acts as creating undead thralls through Necromancy, weakening the fabric of creation with Forbidden spells, or inflicting curses to utterly ruin the lives of those who offend them. While spells and traditions go a long way toward making magicians distinct, their study, research, and practice also open doors to entirely new avenues of development.

Tradition talents offer magicians another way to reflect growing mastery of the traditions they discover. Each tradition offers a set of five talents related to the nature of its magic. You can choose these talents in place of the standard magician talent as indicated in the tradition’s description, provided you have discovered the tradition. If, for example, you have discovered Arcana and Alchemy, you could exchange the Cantrip talent for Alchemy Focus and Arcana Focus.
